The Emporia High boys soccer team gave Maize South the defending state champions in Class 5A a game Monday night.
Maize South defeated the Spartans, 3-2.
Maize South led 2-1 at halftime with the Spartans getting their first goal from Emilio Aleman. Damian Garicilazo scored on a penalty kick in the second half.
Emporia High coach Victor Ibarra said it was a good test for his team against the reigning state champions.
Emporia High (3-4) travels to Topeka High on Thursday.
