Work next week to renovate parts of Kansas Highway 99 through Emporia will lead to some traffic adjustments.
City Communications Manager Christine Torrens says there will be two-way traffic throughout the annual City Connecting Link Improvement Project, although there could well be some short traffic delays. Parking on Commercial Street just south of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks will also be affected, according to City Engineer Jim Ubert.
Starting next week, work will involve Commercial Street between Kansas Avenue and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks, West 12th between Commercial and Merchant and Merchant between 12th and Interstate 35. Work will include mill and overlay, new pavement markings and repairs to traffic signal loop detectors.
This project continues a very busy summer and early fall for city infrastructure work. The city is nearing the end of its annual Street Rehab project, which included nearly 30 different work zones scattered across town. It also comes as work continues on the 24th and Prairie waterline replacement process, with work now underway on Prairie Street near Four Seasons Apartments. Work is also ongoing on the Interstate 35 bridge replacement project over Lincoln Street, but — unlike the 24th and Prairie work zone — construction over Lincoln Street will pause for the winter.

Downtown Emporia will see a lot of construction equipment over the next two months.
The annual City Connecting Link Improvement Project is set to begin next week, bringing fresh asphalt pavement, new pavement markings and what the city calls repairs to traffic signal loop detectors.
Milling, or work to remove pavement, will start on Commercial Street between Kansas Avenue and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks. Milling will then follow on 12th between Commercial and Merchant as well as Merchant from 12th to Interstate 35.
Traffic signal loop wire repairs will follow milling, followed by paving on Commercial, West 12th between Commercial and Merchant and Merchant north of 12th to I-35.
City Communications Manager Christine Torrens says there maybe temporary delays, but there will be two-way traffic at all times during the work. However, there will be impacts to on-street parking on Commercial south of the railroad tracks.
City Engineer Jim Ubert will have more on CCLIP and a host of other projects on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment at 7:20 am Friday.
