The Emporia State women’s soccer team scored twice in the last five minutes of the first half and blanked Newman 2-0 in each team’s MIAA opener at the ESU Pitch Friday afternoon. Each team played level through the first 40 minutes before the Lady Hornets broke the tie with a goal by Megan Jeremias. With less than a minute to play in the half, Megan Kephart added to the lead with an assist by Ella Rullifson. E-State controlled the action in the second half and outshot the Jets 16-9 and drew seven corner kicks to just one for the Navy & Red. Kephart says the mood is different now that the team has moved into conference play.
Head coach Jane Grimley-Gunn, who picked up her first home win, said her team looked well prepared.
ESU (3-2-1, 1-0 MIAA) returns to the ESU Pitch for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff Sunday with Central Oklahoma.
