The Emporia State volleyball team had a negative hitting percentage in each of the first two sets and fell 3-0 to Missouri Western in each team’s MIAA opener on Friday at the St. Joseph Civic Arena in a 25-13, 25-10, 25-23 sweep for the Griffons. ESU had just 10 kills through the first two sets with 15 errors and couldn’t slow down the Western attack. The Griffons finished with 42 kills and only six errors to hit .313. The Griffons jumped past E-State for 8-2 and 21-10 leads in the first set before a 13-2 run put them up 22-9 in the second set. ESU blew a 22-19 third set lead as the Griffons scored six of the match’s last seven points to claim the win. The Lady Hornet’s didn’t have any attackers in double digit kills. Rayishon Jackman led the defense with 15 digs. ESU (8-3, 0-1) will visit Northwest Missouri Saturday for a 6:00 p.m. first serve.
