Beacon for Hope Suicide Prevention used the last weekend of Suicide Prevention Month to bring that message to the masses with two special events.
First was Saturday night’s Celebrities in Disguise, the singing competition that brought six contestants to the Granada Theatre stage. Under the guise of Widow, Emporia High music teacher Sarah Bays won the title.
Deon Morrow was second as Phantasmo and Hank Osterhout was third as El Musico Verde. Also participating were Tyler Curtis, Daphne Mertens and Jackie Morris.
Meanwhile, Beacon had its first men’s-specific event, Rage Against the Stigma, on Sunday at Peter Pan Park. Beacon Director Melissa Owen says suicide prevention efforts are important at all times of year, but especially over the next several months.
Rage Against the Stigma featured a range of activities, from axe throwing to a disc golf putting contest and weightlifting contest.
Both activities funnel more attention into the Hope With Horsepower car show this upcoming Saturday at Sodens Grove. Activities begin at 9 am, with the event focusing on mental health for veterans and military service personnel.
