A gas station in Lebo has been selected for an electric vehicle charging station as part of a state project.
The Casey’s at 2740 Fauna Road near Interstate 35 is among nine new EV charging sites as part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula program, which is working to add direct current fast-charging stations across Kansas. Emporia’s Flying J was approved for a new station back in January.
As part of NEVI, charging stations must be located along what are called “Alternative Fuel Corridors” as designated by the federal government. The stations have be available every 50 miles, must be within a mile of the AFC and must have the capacity to charge four vehicles at 150 kilowatts simultaneously. They also must be accessible at all times to the public and have food, beverages, restrooms and inclement weather shelter available.
Federal funding is capped at 80 percent of project costs, so there must be a 20 percent private or local cash match for these charging stations.
