The academic calendar for next year will be a featured discussion point for the USD 253 Emporia Board of Education on Wednesday.
This is the latest conversation about the 2025-26 calendar after meetings earlier this spring. Staffers overwhelmingly support an option set to remove the traditional Wednesday late starts at Emporia High and Emporia Middle School while creating a shorter day for students and a corresponding professional learning time for educators once a month — and adding roughly 20 additional minutes to the school day at the elementary level. Patrons and parents are split between that option and another that would not change the classroom schedule or the length of the school year.
Other business for the board includes a recognition of First United Methodist Church for organizing school supplies for district students, as well as progress reports for kindergarten through fifth grade. One executive session is slated for attorney consultation.
The meeting starts at 6 pm at Mary Herbert Education Center.
