Emporia State fell in a five-set heartbreaker to Washburn 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 15-13 at Lee Arena in Topeka Tuesday. The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after coming back from an early 7-2 deficit. After three-straight ESU points, neither team had a lead of bigger than three the rest of the way. Washburn leaped to a 5-1 lead in set two before E-State tied it at 9, but a 7-1 run that made it 16-10 Washburn was too much to overcome for ESU. Emporia State broke open a 15-all tie in the third with a 7-2 spurt to take a 2-1 lead in the match before Washburn leveled it with a 4-1 run late to end the fourth. The Lady Hornets trailed 10-7 in the fifth before nudging in front with a 5-1 run at 12-11 but faltered at the end by gifting three straight points to Washburn on a pair of attack errors and a bad set. Washburn converted on their second match point to take the Tussle. Weronicka Wrzesinska hit .281 with 27 kills on 64 swings for her second 20-kill match of the season while Camilla Ossola hit a blistering .441 with 18 kills and just three errors on 34 attacks. McKenya Sorrells led the way defensively with 4.5 blocks while Sydney Fiatte shoveled out 29 digs. Brailee Bogle had a career high 54 assists. E-State (11-4, 3-2 MIAA) continues a four-game road swing Friday at #3 Nebraska-Kearney.
