As James Nunley battles cancer for the second time in his young life, fundraising events are starting to dot the community calendar.
Emporia Fire will have a “Team James: No One Fights Alone” meal at Station 2, 1427 Industrial, starting at 5 pm Nov. 3. The meal will include a pulled pork sandwich, beans, chips and a cookie for a freewill donation.
James Nunley battled childhood leukemia almost four years ago and went into remission in April 2023. Unfortunately, he began developing similar symptoms in late August and was eventually diagnosed with a return of the cancer. On KVOE’s Morning Show recently, Nunley’s father, Michael, said the initial experience helped the family recognize the potential for cancer — although this doesn’t make the experience any easier to handle.
Nunley’s mother, Angela, says leukemia patients can relapse while they are in treatment. James is now set up for at least two years of radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
