Subfreezing temperatures Wednesday morning will lead to an increased fire risk areawide Thursday.
All area counties are in a freeze warning until 9 am with lows projected to be 30 degrees or lower Wednesday. Widespread frost is expected. Overnight lows reached 30 at the Emporia Municipal Airport.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has fire weather watches up for Lyon and almost all surrounding counties Thursday, with Greenwood County the lone exception. The Weather Service expects ongoing dry conditions to persist, aided by the freeze Wednesday. Also, high temperatures will approach 70 degrees, relative humidity levels will be at or below 20 percent and southerly winds will be as high as 35 mph. Residents are encouraged to be extremely careful with anything that could spark a fire because blazes will be hard to control in those conditions.
