KVOE’s Candidate Forum on Thursday morning highlighted the race for the Senate seat representing Lyon County.
Republican Mike Argabright and Democrat Lillian Lingenfelter answered KVOE News and listener questions, including public education funding and policy — not surprising, with Argabright serving as a longtime superintendent for USD 252 Southern Lyon County and administrator at USD 389 Eureka and Lingenfelter serving as a teacher for USD 244 Burlington and the board president for USD 253 Emporia. Lingenfelter says she has seen firsthand the need for teachers to buy school supplies because full school funding doesn’t reach those areas.
Argabright says special education needs more funding, and experience is needed in Topeka when it comes to funding formulas.
Abortion has been a hot topic for decades, both at the state and national levels. During KVOE News’ primary election Candidate Forum, Argabright had said he is pro-life and supports exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother — but a flyer sent out shortly after that interview mentioned Argabright’s complete backing of a pro-life agenda. Argabright echoed his Candidate Forum comment from July on Thursday’s interview.
Lingenfelter says the mailing, rather than the statement, is Argabright’s true view and she supports a woman’s right to choose.
Both are seeking to follow Republican Jeff Longbine, who served the district 14 years and is exiting the Statehouse at the end of this term.
This leaves KVOE with one Candidate Forum on our pre-election schedule: the Lyon County Commission Third District forum between Republican Chris Bartel and Democrat Bill Nienstedt. That forum airs at 10:06 am Tuesday on KVOE and KVOE.com.
In other election news, mail ballots were sent out to requesting voters Wednesday. Thursday is also the second day of a four-day offsite voting opportunity for Lyon County residents, with that advance vote option taking place at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building. In-office advance voting at the Lyon County Courthouse begins Monday.
More information is available through KVOE.com’s Voter Information Guide presented by Community National Bank and Trust.
