Budgetary matters were a big topic for KVOE News’ final Candidate Forum for the 2024 general election cycle.
Answering those questions were the candidates for the Lyon County Commission Third District seat, Republican Chris Bartel and Democrat Bill Nienstedt. On KVOE’s primary election Candidate Forum in July, Bartel suggested the county begin using a zero-budget approach for department heads. He re-emphasized that approach Tuesday and he says county commissioners need to take a more active role in budgetary matters.
Nienstedt believes a zero-based budget approach may not lead to much difference in numbers submitted by department heads.
Both candidates were also asked for their thoughts on the county’s role as Newman Regional Health and Stormont Vail continue conversations about a new medical facility in Emporia. Both candidates say a county hospital like Newman Regional Health is a major community asset. Nienstedt says the county shouldn’t micromanage its appointed Board of Trustees or the chief executive officer in cases such as this.
Bartel says there is one simple way to handle any communication issue — and he says losing Newman Regional Health would have a massive ripple effect on the local economy.
Both candidates are looking to follow Rollie Martin, who is ending a long career as county commissioner and as board chair.
The general election is Nov. 5. More information about local and area races, special questions, polling places and upcoming dates of note are available in the KVOE.com Voter Information Guide courtesy of Community National Bank and Trust.
