The man convicted of killing Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels nearly 20 years ago is in the middle of a bench trial continuing at least through the rest of this week.
Scott Cheever shot Samuels to death in early 2005 as Samuels was leading a drug raid near Hilltop. Cheever was convicted of capital murder in 2007 and was sentenced to death — along with over 700 months in prison for charges including attempted capital murder, manufacturing methamphetamine and conspiracy to manufacture meth. Cheever has been through a number of appeals since his conviction.
Cheever has a bench trial underway since Oct. 15, seeking relief for claims of ineffective counsel. Trial could last to Friday.
