Grass fire activity last week prompted Kansas Governor Laura Kelly to issue a disaster declaration including one area county.
The governor issued a verbal state of disaster Thursday after fires in Chase County, as well as Doniphan, Marion, Montgomery and Sedgwick counties.
On Thursday, firefighters from Chase and Marion counties, as well as nearby ranchers, worked together to put out a 1,400-acre grass fire that developed northeast of Cedar Point and damaged grass and trees.
As the fire danger remains elevated for the rest of the week, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management is now “at partial activation” to help local responders and affected counties as needed.
