The Emporia State volleyball team played their fourth five-set match in their last five and came from behind for a grinding two-and-a-half-hour 17-25, 25-12, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13 victory over Northwest Missouri on Wednesday night at White Auditorium in Emporia. The Bearcats came out on fire hitting .341 with just two errors in the first, but ESU answered by hitting .400 in the second. After trading the next two sets, the Lady Hornets fell behind 3-0 to start the fifth before using a 4-0 run to take the lead. Northwest’s last two swings missed the mark to give ESU the win. Camilla Ossola led the Black & Gold with 21 kills hitting .275 on 51 attacks while Weronicka Wrzesinska added 16 kills with a team-high 21 digs. Three of the last four victories for the Lady Hornet wins have come in five-setters. Ossola says the matches have been tiring but the comebacks have been worth it.
The team used two setters with Brailee Bogle and Sydney Fiatte each registering over 20 assists. Head coach Ken Murczek said he made the change to make MIAA defenses change how they were defending the ESU offense.
ESU (15-6, 7-4 MIAA) returns to action Thursday to host #24 Missouri Western for Halloween Fright Night. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m.
