The Emporia State men’s basketball team didn’t lead in the second half and fell 74-67 at Colorado Mesa on Saturday Night at Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Co. ESU started well building a 16-9 lead early in the first, but the Mavericks scored eight straight to take their first lead with just over nine minutes left in the opening half. After the teams traded the lead back-and-forth, ESU wasn’t in front again after the seven-minute mark in the first half. ESU took advantage of CMU turnovers outscoring the Mavericks 18-9 in points off turnovers, but the Hornet defense couldn’t slow down the home team allowing Mesa to shoot 58 percent from the field including 10-for-19 shooting from outside the arc. Three Hornets scored in double-figures led by Malik Edwards Jr. while Devin Conley added a career-high 16 points. ESU (1-5) is off until December 1 when they will finally have their home opener against Peru State College. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. with pregame coverage at 1:30 p.m. on the Hornet Sports Network/Mix 104.9.
