Emporia residents are invited to the David Traylor Zoo Tuesday for two exciting activities.
The annual Happy Holidaze lighting ceremony will take place once the sun goes down Tuesday evening. Zoo Director Brenda Young says she’s looking forward to seeing the lighting in person.
Once the switch is flipped, the lights will remain on daily from 6 pm to midnight through the end of the year. At this time, Young doesn’t have an exact light count but says the majority are once again LEDs which provide several benefits including more cost and energy efficiency.
The zoo lighting is scheduled to occur between 5:45 and 6 p.m., with the doors opening at 5 p.m. KVOE’s Tagan Trahoon will broadcast from Happy Holidaze beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The family of Dr. Michael Lloyd, who won the privilege during the annual EFOZ Zoo Roundup Auction earlier this year, will handle the lighting duties this year.
Ahead of the annual lighting ceremony, residents are asked to embrace the spirit of giving which is synonymous with the holiday season and support the annual Emporia Police Benefit Association Toy Drive. If you want to contribute to the toy drive, either Tuesday or at a later time, and would like ideas for gifts click here to view an Amazon wish list.
Additional activities Tuesday will include music from the Emporia High and Emporia Middle School Chorales, as well as a craft, reindeer games, appearances by Santa, Mrs Claus and Buddy the Elf and hot cocoa.
