We almost can’t go a week without reporting at least one scam going across our coverage area or the state, and the latest ones revolve around alleged law enforcement statements.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says one of the scams involves a text and a false image of a US District Court warrant. The text includes the citizen’s name for the purpose of “an arrest of a witness in a civil action” as well as a payment to remove the warrant.
The Emporia Poilce Department, meanwhile, says scammers are posing as both employees of the Sheriff’s Office and “Lyon County Police Department” about phony warrants, missed jury summons and instructions to pay bonds over the phone.
Neither Emporia Police nor the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will text people about warrants, and law enforcement does not demand any sort of payments over the phone. The departments also urge people not to send money, bitcoin and/or personal information if they receive any such texts.
If you have questions, call the Police Department at 620-343-4225 or Sheriff’s Office at 620-341-3205.
