The investigation into a destructive house fire in Olpe is now being led by the Office of the Kansas State Fire Marshal.
That’s according to Olpe Fire Chief Wade Schmidt who spoke to KVOE News Sunday, nearly 24 hours after a fire developed at a residence in the 700 block of Kansas Highway 99 Saturday evening. The fire left some walls standing, however, the home is considered a total loss.
The Office of the Kansas Fire Marshall arrived on scene Sunday morning to begin the investigation at the request of Olpe Fire. Schmidt says the call to the state was procedural.
The fire that destroyed the one-time home of late Olpe Chicken House owners Leonard and Theresa Coble at 730 K99 first became evident around 6:30 pm Saturday and led to a response from Olpe, Emporia, Lyon County Rural and Hartford-Neosho Rapids firefighters and Lyon County Deputies.
Schmidt tells KVOE News the firefighting effort took place entirely outside of the home as crews were unable to make entry.
Schmidt says it took nearly 21 hours from the first fire call to when the state investigators left to fully clear the scene. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
Any updates on the fire will come from the state level. Stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for further information as it becomes available.
According to Lyon County records, the home is owned by Suzan Stroup-Reed but it is unclear at this time if anyone was living in the residence as it was on the market at the time of the fire. The Zillow listing the price for the four-bed, four-bath, over 3,000-square-foot home was at $675,500.
No injuries were reported.
