With the high school basketball season quickly approaching, the Kansas State High School Activities Association has allowed schools to choose to be a part of a trial run using a 35-second shot clock.
KSHSAA released its participants with the percentage of Yes and No Votes across all six classifications earlier this week. Emporia High and Bonner Springs are the lone ‘No’ votes in Class 5A In Class 6A, 32 of 36 schools voted ‘Yes,’ while Centennial League schools Junction City, Manhattan, Washburn Rural, and Topeka High voted No. In 4A, 25 of 36 voted ‘Yes’ while 11, including Centennial League school Hayden voted ‘No’.
With Emporia High not participating in the trial run of the shot clock for its home games, any opponent or midseason tournament that Emporia High travels to during the regular season that has opted into the trial run for the season has to notify them of the usage of the shot clock for said games.
Areawide, seven of the eight Lyon County League schools have opted in for the trial run with Northern Heights being the lone ‘No’ vote. All eight Flint Hills League schools voted ‘No’ in their respective classifications.
In Class 3A, 18 schools voted ‘Yes’ including Burlington. In Class 2A, 5 schools voted ‘Yes,’ while 11 1A schools voted ‘Yes.’ Around the state, 125 schools voted ‘Yes’ while 215 said ‘No’. The trial run for the shot clock will only be in effect for the regular season games and not the postseason.
