The Emporia Recreation Commission is meeting Thursday afternoon.
This is the latest check-in meeting before the final public engagement session next week. The meeting starts at 3 pm at Mary Herbert Education Center. The Rec Commission’s website says there will be conversations about project, operation and design updates.
How the Rec Commission and its Steering Committee move forward with a new public recreation center at Champions Landing remains to be seen in light of this week’s announcements of closures from Holiday Resort effective Friday and Tyson Foods effective by late February. Currently, there is a special election planned for March 4, dealing with a 0.5-percent sales tax increase as the main funding mechanism. Steering Committee Chair Erren Harter says there are no plans to move the new rec center from Champions Landing — and specifically to Tyson due to the repurposing and renovation costs.
The final Imagine the Future community town hall will be at 6:30 pm Tuesday at White Auditorium, featuring a community question-and-answer session and a conceptual design presentation.
