It was a split for the Emporia High basketball teams at Liberal on Friday night.
The Emporia High boys improved to 1-0 with a 71-18 victory over the Redskins while the Lady Red defeated the Lady Spartans, 60-25. In the boys game, Emporia High overcame a slow start down 6-2 but turned it around for a 15-10 lead at the end of one and used a 25-6 second quarter for a 40-16 lead at halftime. The Spartans outscored the Redskins 31-2 in the second half. Three Spartans scored in double-figures led by Rylan Crowell with 13 points while Chase Harrington and Madden Seidl each had 11. Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin said the Spartans’ strength in numbers was big.
In the girls game, Emporia High held multiple leads early in the first quarter but a key 6-0 Liberal run gave the Lady Red a 9-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Liberal led 31-17 at half and used a 29-8 second half en route to the win. Maycee Davis led Emporia High with eight points. Emporia High coach Taylor Scott was proud of what her girls were able to do in their first game out.
Emporia High will host the Paul Terry Classic beginning on Tuesday and will take on Spring Hill with the doubleheader set for a 6 p.m. start. The RV-Doc Pregame Show will begin at 5:45 p.m. on KVOE.
