One person was hospitalized after the second crash into an Interstate 35 pond near Emporia this month.
Saturday morning’s crash happened shortly after 7:30 am near the I-35 East Sixth Avenue exit southbound. Emporia Fire Capt. Willie Ward says the unnamed driver went off I-35 about 75 yards into the pond before walking to a nearby house, where Emporia Fire responded and later took him to Newman Regional Health.
Given the immediate situation, Emporia Fire brought its Water Rescue Team, with responses also from Emporia Police and Lyon County deputies. However, after further investigation, Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says the incident was an act of attempted self-harm. Deputies are not issuing a news release for this incident.
This follows a reported injury crash off I-35 between the East Sixth and Road R-1 northbound exits Dec. 5. In that case, a woman apparently had a medical issue before driving off the highway into a pond. The woman was extricated, but her two children were unhurt and none of the three people went to a hospital.
