Two Emporians were hurt as part of separate crashes in basically the same part of Interstate 35 near Emporia early Tuesday.
Emporia Police Capt. Ray Mattas says officers responded to a crash near the Industrial Road exit around 6:15 am. The wreck involved a car driven by 20-year-old Jaison Travelbee Jr. Mattas says Travelbee was northbound but lost control, hit a guardrail and rolled his vehicle an unlisted number of times. The car stopped in the southbound lanes.
Travelbee was taken to Newman Regional Health with unspecified injuries.
The second crash developed soon afterward, according to Lyon County Deputy Collin Brozek — at a time when there was a heavy response already on site, including Emporia Fire/EMS, Emporia Police, Lyon County deputies and the Kansas Department of Transportation. As law enforcement and KDOT were redirecting southbound traffic, a wreck happened involving two northbound vehicles — a car driven by 48-year-old Anitta Maldonado of Wichita and an SUV driven by 55-year-old Saeeda Khalil of Emporia. Brozek says Maldonado had slowed down because of the first wreck and Khalil’s vehicle rear-ended the Maldonado car.
Khalil was taken to Newman Regional Health with suspected minor injuries.
Passing lanes in both directions were closed for about 90 minutes to allow for the emergency responses and crash investigations.
