Cause undetermined after fire destroys van outside downtown Emporia bank

Emporia Fire is investigating after fire destroyed a van in downtown Emporia on Friday, but a cause has not been determined.

Firefighters were dispatched to ESB Financial, 801 Merchant, around 3:30 pm after a van caught fire in a parking spot on the south side of the bank. The fire was quickly put out, but the van is likely a total loss.

The van had a “for sale” sign on the back doors.

Traffic on Eighth between Merchant and Congress was blocked briefly to let firefighters handle the situation.
