An additional 1-2 inches of snowfall is possible for Emporia with higher accumulation, up to three inches, possible elsewhere in the KVOE listening area with an incoming winter system Thursday into Friday.
That’s according to NWS Meteorologist John Woynick.
Freezing drizzle is also possible with the incoming winter system, however, that should not affect the KVOE listening area according to Woynick.
The pending forecast is a far cry from the five-plus inches we saw in Emporia Sunday, with higher totals elsewhere, which caused several problems for travel across the area. Locally, road conditions have seen significant improvement thanks to the work of Emporia Public Works Crews as well as some abundant sunshine the last two days.
As for what the forecasted snowfall could mean for said conditions over the next 24 hours, Emporia Public Works Director Dean Grant says he is not too concerned the pending snowfall will set back their efforts heading into the weekend as it will not include several factors that came with Sunday’s activity.

2:41 pm Wednesday: WEATHER: Winter weather advisory posted for Lyon, most surrounding counties Thursday into Friday
Just as local streets were starting to show themselves after this past weekend’s winter storm, another burst of snowfall is possible for parts of the KVOE listening area.
Travel in and around Emporia has been slow after freezing rain Saturday was followed by five inches or more of snow Sunday and subzero air temperatures or wind chills since the weekend. Sunshine and temperatures in the low 20s Wednesday afternoon helped, given the amount of melting materials on city streets and paved county roads, but another refreeze is possible Wednesday night and there is now a chance of 1-3 inches of snowfall across parts of the KVOE listening area Thursday night into Friday morning.
A winter weather advisory involves Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties from 3 pm Thursday to 6 am Friday. Chase and Greenwood counties are in a separate advisory from noon Thursday to 6 am Friday, with up to 2 inches of snow possible.
KVOE and KVOE.com will have updates.
2:30 pm Wednesday: Travel conditions thaw out Wednesday, while auto repair shops get increasingly busy
As travel conditions edge back to full speed, auto repair shops are getting increasingly busy.
Express Tire and Auto owner John Ingold says there have been a lot of tire installations since Monday. He’s also noting a pair of rather standard wintertime issues.

6:45 am Wednesday: Slow going again Wednesday; Emporia school buses delayed
Morning travel is still not up to full speed areawide after a powerful winter storm this past weekend.
Emporia’s main streets are treated and bladed — but also snowpacked with icy spots, especially after some progress Tuesday led to a refreeze overnight. City Manager Trey Cocking says it is important to know your vehicle’s limits in these conditions.
City Public Works Director Dean Grant says crews will continue to hit hot spots on Wednesday. He says the morning ice could be deceptive.
USD 253 Emporia says buses are running late due to cold and travel conditions. City trash trucks may also be going through their routes slower than normal.
The Emporia Police Department says Level 2 crash reporting is ongoing until conditions improve. In Level 2 reporting, officers do not respond to crashes unless roads are blocked or people are hurt. People involved in crashes need to exchange insurance information with other drivers involved, along with vehicle make, model and tag number. People in crashes also need to report wrecks at Emporia Police headquarters once it is safe to travel.
Outside the Emporia city limits, Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods says paved roads are in “fair condition” — but travel will still be slow until there’s a noticeable warmup, which now appears likely Thursday. Woods says drivers will need to remain extra cautious especially when they see Highway Department vehicles on the road.

State offices affected by the winter storm are set to reopen Wednesday.
