Brad Barrett is getting ready for the 2025 legislative session.
Lawmakers gavel in Monday afternoon, and Barrett says property tax relief is already setting up to be a hot topic through the upcoming session.
Barrett replaces Eric Smith, who also served as Coffey County Undersheriff during his eight years in the Legislature. Barrett brings experience as a Shawnee County District Attorney special investigator focusing on exploitation cases, as well as time as a Coffey County deputy, to Topeka.
Barrett says he is already working with the Office of Revisor to adjust certain language in exploitation cases. He also sees water issues as major concerns statewide, and he has also mentioned the importance of protecting Second Amendment rights and traditional family rights as priorities. He does not support Medicaid expansion and says the state needs to expand its economic development efforts with concerns about dwindling tax revenues through the rest of this decade.
