January means tax time in a lot of circles, and special help is coming for local and area residents, courtesy the Emporia Senior Center and AARP.
Local organizer Sally Conard says this is a vital service for a lot of residents.
Conard says there will be help with simple tax returns.
The service is free and is typically considered as geared strictly for seniors, but Conard encourages residents in other age demographics — notably young adults — to use the service. In past years, assistance has been at both the Senior Center and at least one branch of Emporia State Federal Credit Union. This year, all help will be at the Senior Center.
The appointment window opens Jan. 20, with appointment dates in February. Residents wanting help can call the Senior Center at 620-343-3160 to set appointments. Conard urges residents to have all their needed paperwork in hand when they arrive, along with a photo ID and Social Security card. She also asked for volunteers to handle phone calls at the Senior Center during its operating hours of 9 am to 1 pm weekdays.
Residents with more questions can call Conard at 620-341-1971.
