Air temperatures dipped to -8 shortly after sunrise Tuesday and were below zero starting around midnight. The -8 broke the prior unofficial record of -3 dating back to 1984.
Emporia wasn’t the only Kansas location with new records due to the cold. Topeka dipped to -12, breaking a record dating back to 1888. Salina and Wichita broke records dating back to 1935. Russell tied its cold weather records dating back to 1966 early Tuesday.
Light winds made it feel much colder than the air temperatures. Emporia had a low wind chill of -24 before conditions improved.
