The city of Emporia has released a statistics packet about its snow and ice removal efforts from Jan. 4-17.
The city says it used almost 400 tons of salt at a cost of almost $41,000. It also had almost 840 man hours worked at a cost of over $24,000.
There were several challenges through the treatment and clearing effort. Two dump trucks broke down on separate occasions and a road grader never made it to the street because it was in the shop before the winter weather arrived. The initial storm’s progression — freezing drizzle to snow — also meant the city could not pretreat certain streets with brine, while the resulting snowpack made it difficult to impossible for the city to remove snow and ice from residential neighborhoods once the city decided to take that step last Wednesday. Some of that snowpack melted away late last week, but a lot still remains.
Emporia saw around 8 inches of snow and 0.25-0.50 inches of ice as part of two separate winter events Jan. 4-10.
