Emporia Board of Education members discussed curriculum alignment with state standards and ongoing construction as part of their regular meeting Wednesday.
Current Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Student Services Judy Stanley says alignment conversations are important because they make sure subjects have consistent goals as students move towards graduation.
Stanley says the district will continue developing adjustments through what are called Lead Teacher and Vertical Alignment Days before the results and recommendations are posted on the district website, usd253.org. The goal is to include the alignment information in the district’s action plan.
Separately, the board got an update on the Building for the Future bond package leading to improvements at all district schools. McCown Gordon Senior Project Manager Eric Woltje says William Allen White Elementary, the last school to see construction and renovation as part of the nearly $80 million bond, is about 85 percent complete and is ahead of schedule. Roofing repairs and renovating the original kitchen as a storage area are among the projects yet to finish.
As part of the consent agenda, the board approved the following personnel moves:
*Scott Paul as Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Student Services. Paul replaces Judy Stanley, who is retiring.
*Erica Mickelson as Director of Human Resources. Mickelson replaces Jared Giffin, who is retiring.
*Stephanie McCracken as Assistant Principal at Emporia High School. McCracken replaces Brent Burns, who was recently named as principal at Emporia Middle School.
The board also approved a $10,000 donation in memory of Steven Davis for the Emporia High Theatre program through the Emil Babinger Charitable Trust as well as a $1,000 donation from Witten Construction for Emporia High’s Spartan Stop.
