A month ago, USD 252 Southern Lyon County was combatting a serious issue with drivers not abiding by the rules of the road when it came to school bus etiquette.
According to USD 252 Southern Lyon County Superintendent Ryan Muhlig, the district was reporting an alarming number of drivers speeding by school buses that had their stop signs deployed. Muhlig tells KVOE News it was an almost daily occurrence and it was not limited to one or two vehicles.
Muhlig, during an interview with KVOE News Tuesday, stated the district had purchased and installed new rear-view cameras on each bus, a purchase that was approved last year to deter the behavior. Since that time, Muhlig says they have had no issues with drivers obeying the rules of the road, however, he doesn’t believe the cameras were the main reason.
Muhlig says the district is planning to keep the new cameras installed on all buses saying it is always better to have them and not need them rather than to need them and not have them.
Kansas law KSA 8-1556 requires all drivers to stop when approaching a school bus that has its stop sign deployed and red lights flashing. Failing to do so can endanger children and others departing the bus or crossing the street.
Violations of said laws can result in significant fines, citations, points on your driver’s license and court costs exceeding $400 in some cases.
