Nobody was hurt after a trailer fire developed in southwest Emporia on Friday afternoon.
Fire was reported at Southgate Trailer Estates, 1601 West South Lot 12, shortly before 4 pm. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says the fire was limited to a back bedroom and was small in nature — but was apparently caused by combustibles too close to a space heater.
As far as other winter fire safety tips, Conley reminds residents not to use stoves for home heating purposes. He also urges residents to get smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Two dogs were removed safely.
Neighbors began calling 911 as the fire was in its early stages. Conley says that played a big role in an early knockdown with minimal fire damage. Americus and Olpe firefighters were initially called to respond but were canceled before arriving.
