More people are needing services through the United Way of the Flint Hills’ Community Partners.
That was one of the update points from Monday’s Talk of Emporia on KVOE. And United Way CEO Daphne Reed Mertens says it’s one of the reasons why people need to donate over the next several months, using a single father and other examples to prove her point.
Those increased needs come after several business closure announcements over the last two months, starting with Tyson and Holiday Resort and continuing with Thermal Ceramics, Bling and Buckle. Mertens says those announcements have affected fundraising, but other businesses have stepped up to offset those losses.
Mertens also says workplace campaigns continue “as often as we can.” The United Way is also continuing its push to add grant funding to the mix as a way to put less pressure on traditional donations.
