She is open to a Republican plan for ending income taxes on tips, but Kansas Governor Laura Kelly says she has a better plan in mind for Kansas workers.
The governor, along with Senate Minority Leader Dinah Sykes and House Minority Leader Brandon Woodard, have issued a proposal to more than double the state’s minimum wage from $7.25 to $15. Governor Kelly says she is willing to negotiate on laws to cut taxes on tips, but she also says the Republican plan, announced by Senate President Ty Masterson last week, “will do nothing to make eggs more affordable for Kansans” and her plan will positively impact more people.
Calling the current minimum wage “embarrassingly low,” she also says, “There is no reason workers in Kansas should make less than workers in Missouri.”
The Democrat plan has been submitted in both the Kansas House and Senate.
Separately and on an unrelated topic, the Kansas House has passed what Republicans call the Citizens-Only Voting Amendment to the Kansas Constitution. The bill simply says only United States citizens can vote in elections.
If approved by the Kansas Senate and it is either allowed through by Governor Kelly or sustains a veto effort, the bill would then go to a statewide vote. Two-thirds of state residents would need to vote in favor for the bill to become law.
