The Emporia State baseball team scored four runs in the first inning and beat the host Henderson State 7-4 in their first game of the HSU Invitational in Arkadelphia, Ark. on Thursday. ESU loaded the bases before clearing them with a sacrifice fly and a three-run home run from Jovanni Toledo to take command. After giving up a run in the third, E-State scored in the fourth and fifth on solo shots by Brady Unrein and Peyton Lewis. The Reddies responded with three runs in the fifth but wouldn’t score again. The Hornets added insurance with an eighth-inning RBI single by Toledo. Graeme Rios lasted 4.2 innings in his start and gave up three earned runs and seven hits for a no decision, but the Hornet bullpen was up to the task again with 4.1 innings of shutout pitching. Grant Huffman (1-0) picked up the win while closer Ian Lanik earned his third save with each pitcher registering three strikeouts. ESU (4-0) plays their second game of the HSU Invitational Friday at 2:00 p.m. against Ouachita Baptist.
