The Emporia High basketball teams split with Manhattan on Winter Sports Night Friday at Spartan Gymnasium.
The Spartans won their fifth straight with a 37-35 victory over the Indians. Manhattan won the girls game, 62-29.
In the boys game, Emporia High led by as many as six on several occasions and led 12-8 after one before Manhattan tied the game at 19 at halftime. Emporia High led by six in the third and led 29-24 heading into the fourth quarter. Manhattan took a 31-30 lead before Harry Trelc hit a 3-pointer to give the Spartans the lead back. Manhattan tied the game at 33 before Kobe Franklin hit a jumper to give the Spartans the lead for good with 1:10 remaining. Rylan Crowell led Emporia High with 10 points. Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin said his team made plays at the right time.
Emporia High is now 10-4, 3-1 Centennial League.
In the girls game, Manhattan used an 18-0 run in the first quarter en route to a 21-4 lead after one. Manhattan led 32-16 at halftime and outscored the Lady Spartans 30-13 in the second half. Maycee Davis led Emporia High with 11. Emporia High coach Taylor Scott said the Lady Spartans couldn’t find ways to break Manhattan’s pressure.
Emporia High now 2-12, 0-4 Centennial. Both teams are on the road for a pair of doubleheaders next week heading to Junction City on Tuesday. The RV-Doc Pregame Show is set for 5:45 p.m. on Mix 104.9.
