The Emporia High basketball teams were swept by Hayden Friday night in Topeka.
The Spartans saw an 8-game winning streak snapped against the Wildcats in a 51-37 loss, seeing the Spartans drop back-to-back games for the first time this season. Hayden controlled the girls game as the No. 1 team in 4A swept the season series against the Lady Spartans, 66-25.
In the boys game, Hayden’s hot shooting first quarter was a difference leading 25-7 after eight minutes of play. The Spartans outscored Hayden 10-7 in the second but trailed 32-17 at halftime. Emporia High pulled within eight midway through the third quarter, but it was the closest it got the rest of the way despite outscoring Hayden, 20-19 in the second half. Harry Trelc led Emporia High with 11 points. Emporia High coach Lee Baldwin gave credit to Hayden for the fast start.
Emporia High is now 10-6 and 3-3 in the Centennial League.
In the girls game, it was all Wildcats leading 22-3 after one and 43-9 at halftime. The fourth quarter was contested with a running clock. Jayde Aguirre led Emporia High with seven points. Emporia High coach Taylor Scott said it another tough start to a game.
Emporia High is now 3-13 on the season and 1-5 in the Centennial League. Both teams begin a homestand on Monday with Washburn Rural. The doubleheader was moved up from Tuesday to Monday to play the games before the forecasted weather hits the area. The RV-Doc Pregame Show begins at 5:45 p.m. on KVOE.
