The Emporia State softball team picked up two more close wins to go 5-1 at the Washburn Invitational on Tuesday. In their first game of the day, ESU beat Maryville 2-1 in 8 innings. ESU led 1-0 through 3 on a Sydney Wagner double, but the Saints scored to tie the game in the 7th. The Lady Hornets pulled out the win after they scored their ghost runner from second as Kinsey Puh-rine raced home for the win as the Maryville catcher threw to first to complete a strikeout. ESU then beat Rockhurst 9-7 and built their lead with a 5-run 2nd inning highlighted by a 3-run blast by Brooke Flewelling. ESU eventually led 7-0 but blew the lead as the Hawks would score the next 7 of the game, but a 2-out 2-run single by Leslie Ramos put ESU in front for good. It’s another road tournament for ESU this weekend in the Midwest College Classic beginning Saturday in Shawnee, Kan.
