17 Emporia High wrestlers are set to compete beginning Friday in the Class 5A State Wrestling Championships at Park City Arena.
10 Lady Spartans will be wrestling, Sienna Spaulding at 105, Chloe Steele at 110, Heily Batres at 115 Kensley Medrano at 120, Claire Starr at 130, Mia Gardner at 135, Yaneli Carranza at 145, Lixy Lainez Rosas at 150, Gabby Duarte at 190 and Alexa Castillo at 235. Medrano is the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 120, Batres is ranked fourth at 115, Duarte is ranked fourth at 190, Castillo is ranked fourth at 235 and Carranza is sixth at 145. The Lady Spartans are ranked seventh as a team in 5A. Emporia High coach Shawn Russell said there’s a great approach for day one.
Seven Spartans will be wrestling, Kolton Wyatt at 113, Jackson Goodman at 132, Landon Wohletz at 138, Dustin Dobson at 150, Garrett LeBlanc at 165, Tayten Ervin at 175 and Jose Vargas at 285. Emporia High coach Brook Medrano said the Spartans’ approach is simple.
Matches begin at 9 a.m. with all Emporia High matches airing on KVOE. Saturday’s coverage will begin after 9 a.m. and go until the final wrestler is left.
