Emporia High School wrestling history was written multiple times inside of Hartman Arena at the 5A state championship tournament Saturday.
EHS Juniors Alexa Castillo (235 lbs) and Kensley Medrano (120 lbs) both claimed state titles in their respective weight classes, becoming the first Lady Spartan wrestlers to bring state championships in school history. Castillo advanced to the championship match, defeating Andover’s Taijana Bryant in the championship quarterfinals and Sarayja Nelson of Leavenworth in the semi-finals both by fall.
She would then go on to defeat Kaupan Mt. Carmel’s then undefeated Gianna Redcorn 3-2 in the finals. Castillo says she couldn’t have done it without her massive support system behind her.

In the championship semi-final, Medrano Medrano pinned Shawnee Heights’ Audrey Hinkly to set up a regional finals rematch with Topeka Seaman’s Taylie Heston, whom she defeated 3-2.
