For well over a century, Emporia’s local Welsh population has gathered annually to celebrate one of their country’s most honored holidays, St. David’s Day.
The holiday celebrates the country’s patron saint who lived in the Sixth Century and was best known for his preaching ability, as well as founding monasteries and churches in Wales and southwest England. In recognition of St. David’s Day, the Emporia Presbyterian Church West Campus once again played host to the annual St. David’s Day Concert, which included a choir made up of community members and led by Dr. Eluned Jones.
The selections for Sunday’s concert included the singing of both the American and Welsh national anthems and various hymns, including the traditional Welsh welcome song “We’ll Keep A Welcome Hill in the Hillside.”
Sunday was the 137th annual edition of Emporia’s St. David’s Day Concert which followed the traditional Welsh Tea event in Lebo Thursday.
