The Emporia High girls basketball team wrapped up its season on Monday against Newton at Spartan Gymnasium.
Emporia High led by as many as 11 in the contest, but Newton got the game-winning bucket with 11 seconds left to pick up a 36-35 victory. The first quarter was tight-knit with the Lady Spartans holding a 6-3 advantage. EHS went up 10-3 before Newton pulled within one at 10-9. The Lady Spartans finished the second quarter on an 8-1 run for an 18-10 lead at halftime. Emporia High led by as many as 11 at 25-14 and led 27-19 heading into the fourth. Newton outscored Emporia High 17-8 in the fourth quarter. The Lady Spartans had multiple looks to get the lead back after Newton took the lead, but didn’t get a shot to drop. Maycee Davis led the way for Emporia High with 13 points. Emporia High went 10-for-24 at the free throw line while going 4-for-12 in the second half. Emporia High coach Taylor Scott said it was a tough loss to have to end the regular season.
Emporia High finishes its season at 4-17 and graduates two seniors, Adeiah Heffner and Ryan Howe, but will return nine players with varsity experience for the 2025-26 season.
