The latest scam allegedly involving law enforcement is apparently targeting registered offenders.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are telling offenders they have missed a DNA swab or other requirements to maintain their registry. Scammers then say the registered offenders have to make unspecified payments to avoid being arrested. Scammers have also spoofed a phone number from the Lyon County Emergency Communications, making the call appear legitimate.
The Sheriff’s Office says it will never tell people about warrants during phone calls and it will never demand payment to clear warrants. It also says people demanding gift card or cryptocurrency payments to clear warrants are a clear sign the call is a scam effort.
If you get a call from a number showing up as the Lyon County Emergency Communications Center or the Sheriff’s Office and the caller is demanding payment, deputies say you should hang up and return the call. If you have questions, call Emergency Communications at 620-343-4225 and ask for a deputy.
