Emporia Main Street has a new grant partner — and a brand-new grant.
The Simons Foundation is partnering with Main Street America to offer funding through the Science Discovery on Main Street grant program, and Emporia Main Street has secured a $12,500 grant. Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods:
So just how big is this solar system model?
Emporia State’s Plumb Hall will serve as the sun’s location, meaning Earth’s orbit would be around Emporia State’s Sunken Garden. Pluto is included, even though it’s no longer considered a true planet — and its southerly orbit would be near Road 150.
Woods says another $25,000 could be available through this two-step grant program. He says this will open up other math-based or science-based funding ventures.
Woods also credits the work of the Main Street Fabrication Lab for helping to secure this grant — saying Main Street may well not have been eligible had the Fab Lab not been up and running. Speaking of the Fab Lab, Director Jeremy Wharton will work with Planetarium Director Mark Brown on developing the planets using Planetarium data.
