Lyon County Commissioners have contributed to a new construction project on the Lyon County Fairgrounds.
During their regular action meeting Thursday, commissioners approved donating $10,000 to the Lyon County Fairboard to assist with the construction of a new chicken and rabbit building, which board member Aaron Armitage says is desperately needed. He tells KVOE News the current building is reaching its end of life and seeing various signs of deterioration.
Armitage tells KVOE News work on the new structure should be getting underway in the next two months.
The total cost of the project is estimated between $20,000 and $25,000, however, Armitage says an exact price point is not in hand just yet as costs for electricity and other amenities have not been factored in just yet. A completion date for the project is also not yet set in stone, however, Armitage says the contractor, MRSK Buildings, has stated it should be ready by the Lyon County Fair this summer.
In other business Thursday, commissioners approved signing the Noxious Weeds department’s annual report and management plan, approved a quote presented by Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods of more than $17,900 from Foley Tractor Company for paver track smooth belts and both the fiscal year 2026 Kansas Department of Corrections adult and juvenile services comprehensive plan and budgets presented by Community Corrections Director Erin Rodriguez. Emporia Public Library Director Pauline Stacchini also delivered a report on the library’s annual performance and statistics.
Lyon County Commissioners will reconvene for their regular action meeting next Thursday inside of the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers at 9 am.
