The Emporia State tennis teams were swept in a doubleheader by UT-Tyler in their second day of action in Orlando, Fla. at the USTA National Campus on Tuesday.
The #38 Emporia State women’s tennis team fell to #31 Texas-Tyler 5-2. ESU was swept in the doubles point to trail 1-0 before quickly dropping three matches in straight sets to lose the dual. Perla Conde stayed hot at #3 singles with a come from behind victory in a super tiebreaker before Giovanna Ferreira emerged as the victor in #1 singles to salvage a second point for ESU (5-4).
The #20 Hornets dropped a 4-3 decision to the Patriots. ESU started strong with a sweep in doubles to take the doubles point including a tiebreaker win at #1 doubles by Alexis Mattenberger and Gwendal Mazuay. UT-Tyler took control of the match with consecutive wins at #4, #5, and #6 singles before Duvan Santiago Torres stopped the bleeding with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory at #6 singles. #18 Anton Sarunic upset his sixth-ranked opponent in straight sets at #1 singels to tie the match but Mostafa Elbasnaly fell in a third set tiebreak in #2 singles as ESU’s (8-2) four-dual winning streak came to an end.
The Florida trip ends for ESU tennis Wednesday as the Hornets face Florida Southern while the Lady Hornets take on Texas A&M-Kingsville.
