The Emporia State baseball team started fast but had to hold on late for a 10-9 win over Missouri Western in game one of the Hornets’ first midweek MIAA series of the season. The Hornets started quick with three runs in the first and four in the second including a three-run dinger by Noah Steele to make it 7-0 through two. The Griffons plated single runs in the fourth and fifth, but the Hornets got them back on a two-run single by Peyton Lewis in the bottom of the sixth. The Griffons made a push in the top of the seventh scoring four runs on the way to outscoring ESU 7-1 over the last three innings of the game, but the Hornets held on to win for the sixth time in their last seven games. Head coach Brad Hill says the team’s approach was good early, but didn’t stay that way over the course of the game.
Peyton Lewis and Noah Steele combined for seven RBI’s while Gerardo Grijalva (1-0) went 5.0 innings striking out five to pick up the win. E-State (11-10, 4-6 MIAA) returns to action Friday to host Newman for a three-game series beginning at 3:00 p.m.
