More pickleball courts are coming to Emporia soon.
The Emporia Pickleball Club has partnered with the City of Emporia to increase the number of courts by adding pickleball lines to the existing tennis courts at Hammond Park. The new courts will extend the number to 10, along with six available at Reeble Park.
Emporia Pickleball Club President Carmen Leeds says the addition of the new courts will help out if courts are not available at Reeble Park during peak hours of the day.
Leeds says the club has taught pickleball to groups at Emporia State, several of the elementary schools, and the Boys and Girls Club’s after school program. Leeds says the club has also donated paddles from club members to the Boys and Girls Club.
Leeds says the club still wants to grow the game in the community, regardless of age or skill level, and to socialize and enjoy the game. Pickleball is played indoors or outdoors with a paddle and a plastic ball with a 34-inch high net. Pickleball can be played with two players (singles competition) or four players (doubles competition).
