National Teachers Hall of Fame Director Maddie Fennell has announced a significant change in the induction announcements taking place later this year.
Since the first induction in 1992, the Hall has gone to inductee schools for surprise announcements. This year, the Hall of Fame will appear on the nationwide CBS Mornings program May 19 to make the announcements.
Also, the National Teachers Hall of Fame has a major gift in hand as it prepares for the annual induction ceremonies in Emporia this upcoming summer.
Fennell says a better than $500,000 estate gift from 1992 inductee Anna Alfiero of Connecticut folds into the Hall of Fame’s ongoing work to build its national reach.
Alfiero passed away two years ago, but not before setting aside over $500,000 for the Hall of Fame. She taught middle school science and math for 35 years and became a guidance counselor shortly after her induction.
Fennell says the gift is getting incorporated into the Hall’s long-term strategic plan, focusing on “getting inductee voices out” through an updated website, revamped museum, new podcast and other methods.
Fennell is also encouraging people to see the revamped Hall of Fame museum inside Emporia State University’s Visser Hall, noting the work of Administrative Assistant Bob Haselhuhn to make rearrangements and additions to the space.
Induction ceremonies are June 16-20 in Emporia.
